Também é ressaltado o papel do desenvolvimento da tecnologia como catalisador da eficiência das operações, por meio da automação com operações mais seguras, menos erros humanos, formas mais eficientes de cobrança e melhor roteirização, por exemplo.

O secretário-geral do UITP cita ainda a importância das inovações para a melhor acessibilidade, maior segurança e menor impacto ambiental como as que endereçam a flexibilidade dos sistemas por meio dos sistemas de Transporte Sob Demanda (DRT), bicicletas e caronas em veículos compartilhados.

Mohamed Mezghani ressalta a necessidade de inovações no campo das políticas públicas, da governança, da prioridade das pessoas sobre os veículos e do abandono por definitivo, agora apoiados em fartas evidências, da falácia de que a abertura de novas vias de tráfego melhoraria o trânsito reconhecendo que ao longo dos anos, a abertura de novas vias vem, na verdade, estimulando a maior utilização dos veículos particulares, sejam eles mais ou menos emissores de poluentes.

Do ponto de vista da Optai, uma das mais relevantes observações feitas neste episódio é a de que a eletrificação da frota, inclusive dos ônibus, não representa uma panaceia e o fato de eletrificar a frota, ainda que reduzindo significativamente as emissões relativas ao sistema, nem de longe endereça o principal problema que é a priorização do transporte público e o incentivo à sua utilização. Ter um ônibus que não emite carbono preso em engarrafamentos não representa uma evolução perceptível da qualidade do serviço e não tem o foco nas principais demandas dos clientes.

Ao discorrer sobre a visão de futuro do UITP e das suas principais iniciativas e projetos para 2024, Mezghani cita 5 principais iniciativas:

Ampliar e fortalecer a rede de associados tendo a possibilidade de personalizar a relação com os membros. Ampliar a presença do UITP na Austrália, Nova Zelândia e África.
Desenvolver a divisão de Mobilidade Compartilhada e ter mais projetos de transporte de massa complementados por projetos de transporte sob demanda.

Aumentar o impacto do UITP no desenvolvimento e defesa de políticas públicas alinhadas com a visão da entidade, tentando se mais influentes e assertivos.

Estabelecimento do UITP como o mais importante centro de conhecimento, desenvolvendo estudos, relatórios, estatísticas, benchmarking e programas de treinamento e capacitação. Diversificação e desenvolvimento de valor agregado aos serviços oferecidos oferecendo plataformas compartilhadas.

Optai recommends to its followers and partners the episode of the Intelligent Transport podcast in which the UITP Secretary-General talks about the resilience of transport systems and the relevance of ensuring that the transport sector moves towards sustainability and decarbonization.

In this episode, Mohamed Mezghani recognizes the importance of the sector’s capacity to contribute to the growth and creation of jobs in urban centers as well as affirms that diversity is a driving force of innovation and sustainable growth in the mobility industry. The adoption of diversity presents itself not only as the ability to adapt to demographic changes, but as the evolution of meeting customer demands.

It also highlights the role of technology development as a catalyst for the efficiency of operations, through automation with safer operations, fewer human errors, more efficient forms of ticketing and better routing, for example.

The Secretary General of UITP also cites the importance of innovations for better accessibility, greater safety and lower environmental impact such as those that address the flexibility of systems through Transport on Demand (DRT) systems, bicycles and rides in shared vehicles.

Mohamed Mezghani stresses the need for innovations in the field of public policy, governance, the priority of people over vehicles and the definitive abandonment, now supported by abundant evidence, of the fallacy that the opening of new traffic routes would improve traffic recognizing that over the years. The opening of new roads, in fact, stimulates the greater use of private vehicles, whether they are more or less pollutant emitters.

From Optai‘s point of view, one of the most relevant observations made in this episode is that the electrification of the fleet, including buses, does not represent a panacea and the fact of electrifying the fleet, although significantly reducing emissions related to the system, does not even remotely address the main problem that is the prioritization of public transport and the encouragement of its use. Having a bus that does not emit carbon but is stuck in traffic jams does not represent a noticeable evolution of the quality of service and does not have the focus on the main demands of customers.

Regarding the future vision of UITP and its main initiatives and projects for 2024, Mezghani quotes 5 main initiatives:

Expand and strengthen the network of associates having the ability to personalize the relationship with the members and expand UITP’s presence in Australia, New Zealand and Africa.
Develop the Shared Mobility division and have more mass transit projects complemented by on-demand transportation projects.

Increase the impact of UITP in the development and defense of public policies aligned with the vision of the entity, trying to be more influential and assertive.

Establishment of UITP as the most important knowledge center, developing studies, reports, statistics, benchmarking and training and capacity building programs as well as diversification and development of added value to the services offered by offering shared platforms.
Ensuring governance and qualified management of the UITP’s core policy “People First“.
